Randy Ellefson's map of his fictious setting Like most fantasy authors, I've created a setting for the novels (bitmap). Of particular note are the eight original races used in place of the standard elves, dwarfs, gnomes, hobbits, ogres, dragons, etc. Races are as integral to fantasy as the supernatural, making this a unique element.

While "finishing" the world creation project (it's never finished) from August 1997 to December 1998, the files were written like an encyclopedia that would include chapters on:

  • The twenty-eight gods and mythology, including the Court of Gods, the Deal of the Gods, the Calendar of Days, and the afterlife.
  • The nine races, including humans. Each receives its own long chapter, including the effect of the gods who made them on them; what they are most known for and nicknames; a complete description of the body, clothing, character, ideology, habitat, society, and customs; combat, arms and armor; and relations with other races, armed forces, and the supernatural.
  • The armed forces, including symbols and requirements, training and testing, arms and armor, rank and advancement, and their relations with the races, other military groups, and settlements.
  • The supernatural, including mages, sorcerers, healers, training, requirements, relations with others, characteristics, symbols, the history of magic, magical items and artifacts, supernatural places and phenomenon (explained or unexplained), the role of religion, and the sixth-sense.
  • The features of the continent, including characteristics of individual forests, mountain ranges, lakes, rivers, and other areas like deserts and bodies of saltwater. The populations of these features and their effect on people's lives are also discussed, as are distances and travel times, customs, and methods.
  • Fifty major cities, towns, and other settlements (and regions like the former kingdom), including everything from symbols, products, and populations (which races live there, why, and how they relate) to armed forces, important people, special occasions, and special features.
  • A brief history.
  • Special items, including ships, special weapons, the valend cards, natural items, and other continents.
  • And a map and a god/race chart.
